The constant internal conflict between conforming to societal expectations and pursuing our authentic desires can lead to feelings of guilt and frustration. It's a struggle that many face – the yearning to break free and live a life that brings genuine happiness and fulfillment.

In a world where societal expectations and norms often dictate our paths, it's easy to feel shackled by circumstances that don't resonate with our innermost wishes.

How do we recognize what we truly want? Why is it so important that we have people around us that fuel our need to pursue what we want rather than take away from it? Is it crucial to stay true to the things you want?

In this episode, CEO of Pursuing Results Matt Johnson joins me to talk about building the life that we want. We also talk about our relationship and why it's important to grow in the same direction as your partner.

You have to give yourself permission to be brutally honest about what you want. -Matt Johnson

-Do opposites attract?

We’ve read the books and we’ve watched the movies but do opposites attract in reality? What does that look like?

-Being brutally honest about what you want

Why is it important to be brutally honest about what we truly want?

-Why don't we have to fit into the norm?

There’s no rule that says that we have to do things that are normalized. How do we find our own version of normal?

Dec 21, 2023

We're living in an era filled with both excitement and fear, where we have new opportunities. Yet the pressure to conform to traditional norms can be overwhelming. The idea that the world is our oyster can be empowering, but the reality is often a struggle against the pressure to fit into a mold.

Living up to others' expectations may result in a sense of disconnection from our true selves, creating a distorted sense of reality.

How do we break free from doing what's traditional and can it help our children to do the same? How do we challenge the conventional norms and encourage our kids to embrace both new opportunities and what they want?

In this episode life strategist, author, therapist and co-host of Be.Play.Love Sophie Chiche joins me to talk about living life the way we want to, why it's so important to do things the way we want to and not the way the world expects us to.

A lot of pain is from living a life that is not really your own. -Sophie Chiche

The desire to understand ourselves and others is universal. When it comes to the compatibility of religious faith and astrological beliefs, confusion and skepticism often arise.

It's a dilemma many grapple with: can we simultaneously have faith in the religious sense and believe in astrological guidance?

How do we reconcile the teachings of our faith with the insights offered by astrological charts? Why does astrology sometimes become a source of controversy?

In this episode, CEO & Founder of Astrology Hub, Amanda Walsh joins me to talk about the split between astrology and religion, how our personalities align with certain things in astrology as well as the concept of karma.

We want to raise emotionally intelligent, connected and kind children who will become awesome adults. We want them to build good relationships, ask good questions and understand the purpose behind everything they do.

Instead of resigning ourselves to kids just being kids, we can intentionally and proactively teach them what matters and stop reinforcing the wrong ideas.

How do we help our kids communicate, develop and grow? How do we teach them lessons that allow them to thrive well into adulthood?

In this episode, I’m joined by writer, speaker, online community leader, and author of “52 Modern Manners for Kids”, Brooke Romney. She shares why she’s passionate about helping children build better relationships, learn good manners and feel more connected.

Every time we tell someone to be grateful for something they find burdensome, frustrating and hard, all we do is create a bunch of guilt and resentment. There’s something a lot better than gratitude - perspective.

What if instead of forcing gratitude, we admit that yes, this thing sucks, but we’re doing it in service of a greater good or bigger goal? By allowing ourselves to shift perspective and not express gratitude for things we’re not happy about, we’re being honest with ourselves, and we move through it a lot easier.

In this episode, I talk about the danger of gratitude, and why perspective is way more effective.

You’ve got to decide the stuff you care about. That way, you can shift your perspective to why the hard things you’re doing matter, then you can be grateful for the journey, even though the moments piss you off. -Dana Malstaff

3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode

-Your brain hates it when you’re sneaky

Forcing yourself to be grateful for things you’re not happy about backfires. What happens to our brains when we’re not honest about something that sucks?

-Balancing things out

No one is grateful for allergies and other challenges. How can we use humor and perspective to deal with it?

-Don’t deny what pisses you off

How do we find out what we care about so we know the hard things we have to do to get them?

Nov 16, 2023

As business owners, our brains are our most valuable asset. When we’re experiencing low energy, brain fog, feeling run-down and decisions feel hard, that’s a sign that something’s off. Very often, that thing is sleep.

In the realm of health, we tend to put our focus on food and exercise, but sleep is the foundation of it all. Sleep is free and we’re already doing it, so why not make it better?

Moms and entrepreneurs often feel like we don’t have enough time in our day for all the things. By getting good sleep, we can actually hack time. When we get our sleep dialed in, our brains move a lot faster, and we get more done in less time.

How do we improve our sleep quality? What are the benefits of good sleep? In this episode, health coach and consultant, Tanessa Shears shares why sleep is the key to feeling good in our bodies and our businesses.

Start with sleep - it’s free and you’re doing it already, so why not start by making the sleep you are getting better? -Tanessa Shears

Things You’ll Learn in This Episode

-Denormalize your pain
Most of us wait for a catalyst to change our health. What are the signs we need to do things differently?

-REM sleep is entrepreneur’s gold
Why is REM sleep so important to our creativity and problem-solving ability?

-Get more from your down-time, me-time, zone-out time
Instead of aimless (and often draining) scrolling, how do we recharge during our down-time?

-Small changes pay off
Tracking our health and taking steps to change is a lot to ask for busy moms and business owners. What are some simple set-it-and-forget-it actions we can take?

Infertility is a struggle so many women deal with privately, and even though medical protocols can help, they aren’t the solution for everyone. Modern medicine has made us forget that our bodies are made to heal themselves. We’re taught to normalize dis-regulation in our bodies and then use Band-Aid solutions instead of getting to the root cause.

How do we tune into our bodies and advocate for ourselves? How did our guest heal her body and go from a 1% chance of getting pregnant to a mom of 4 kids?

In this episode, Infertility Coach, Author and Publisher, Erica Hoke shares her journey to motherhood, and why the medical route isn’t always the best way to solve infertility.

You have to tune into not just pushing through what you’re feeling. -Erica Hoke

3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode

-Your body is made to mend itself

Modern medicine’s approach to infertility is manipulating your body to get you pregnant. Why is it critical to get to the root cause of infertility?

-Advocate for yourself

How do we confidently take charge of what’s in our control and what we’re responsible for when it comes to our health?

-Learning to listen to your pain, discomfort and dis-regulation

How has Erica built a movement of doing what works for our own health according to what our bodies are telling us?

Guest Bio

Erica Hoke is an Author, Publisher, Infertility Mentor & Empowerment Coach who's on a mission to empower infertility patients and disrupt the reproductive medical system.

At 35, Erica was told she had less than a 1% chance of ever conceiving naturally after struggling for years with endometriosis, uterine fibroids, PCOS, thyroid disease, factor 5 Leiden and MTHFR - so she refused to participate in traditional IVF or IUI methods and instead committed to getting to the bottom of her infertility issues via diet, lifestyle changes and traditional Chinese medicine. Today this fierce mom of four shares her inspiring story as a means to give hope to those still seeking a family through alternate paths. Through her free support group, group coaching opportunities and one-on-one sessions Erica mentors’ others through their own journeys while teaching them how to collaborate with their doctors in order to systematically address their obstacles before pursuing invasive and expensive treatments.

For those who have battled and overcome infertility, Erica offers an opportunity to heal through book collaborations and the sharing of their stories - all in the hopes of helping others on their journeys.

Being surrounded by people who genuinely care about us is so important for human beings, but sadly, it’s rare. Far too many people walk around feeling unsupported, unseen and broken.

Creating connection and building communities where they feel cared for, rooted for and seen makes such a huge impact on how they show up in the world.

How do we build communities where people feel at home right off the bat? Why do we have to shift from being the teachers to being the facilitators?

In this episode, Certified Life Coach, and the Connections Director at Nurture to Convert®, Nicole Terrell joins me to talk about the importance of community, and how to go about building it.

We are so busy all the time that we also don’t recognize the power of someone just seeing you. -Dana Malstaff

3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode

-An individual isn’t scalable, but a community is

When we step away from being the teacher and the center of our community, how does that multiply our reach?

-Being stuck is a rite of passage

How do we see being stuck as a set up for something awesome, not a setback?

-You get to be the person that heals people

How do we help people feel less judged, broken, unseen and lonely?

A few years ago, the answer to growing a business was adding a bunch of value and doing all the teaching and training yourself. Today, if we want our audience to hang around, fall in love with us, share us, have loyalty and buy from us, we have to build communities.

How do we make people validated, valued and also create connection with shared beliefs and a vision for the future?

In this episode, I talk about the easiest way to grow our businesses and build a loyal audience.

If you want to grow your business nowadays, the name of the game isn’t to create a bunch of value, it’s to facilitate people feeling valued. -Dana Malstaff

3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode

-The power of a shared vision

How do we make people feel good about being a part of what we’re building?

-You can’t have a business without a community

How do we grow without constantly teaching, training and adding value?

-You’re not alone, you’re not crazy

How do we build communities that foster a sense of belonging?

Sep 14, 2023

The journey of growing our businesses is anything but a straight line. We evolve, change our minds, and things shift in our worlds. We’ll go through stages of figuring things out, reworking things and pivoting and that’s totally okay! That journey builds up a toolkit that makes our communities stronger.

How do we figure out if we’re in the right niche and talking to the right people? How do we stop feeling bad about pivoting and moving into new ideas?

In this episode, returning guest and founder of Motherhood Simplified, Krista Lockwood returns to give us a peek into her evolution and share why it’s okay for our ideas to change.

A teacher doesn’t share with you as they are learning. The teacher takes the best lessons from everything they’ve learned -Dana Malstaff

3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode

-Creating a results framework

How can we reverse engineer what we’re good at so we can succinctly explain why it works?

-It’s hard to build a community on celebration

Why is it so powerful to create a space where people can share their struggles without judgment?

-Sharing from our wounds vs. our scars

How do we know if it’s too early to start teaching something even if we’re passionate about it?

There’s a lot of energy in this world. That’s why we can feel drained by certain people but energized by others.

Understanding what energy makes us feel good and finding more of it allows us to build the lives we want. Also knowing what’s low vibration for us steers away from things that zap our energy.

How can we understand the different energy around us and how it connects to our lives?

In this episode, serial entrepreneur and mom of 3, Nicole Brodie joins me to talk about understanding vibrations, manifesting the life you want and how affirmations and gratitude connect to a happy life.

World-renowned celebrity love strategist and the founder of Love Strategies Adam LoDolce joins me to talk about understanding how men love, the correlation between business and relationships and how to be happier and more fulfilled in a relationship.

Language, our vocal pitches and accents are the ultimate marker of identity. The words we speak and how we say them affect how people perceive us and even our ability to build authority.

As parents, there are facets of our kids' vocabulary that we might not get, like why they say ‘sus’ and ‘fire’, but these words actually reveal a lot about history, culture and identity.

How does language evolve over time? What linguistic features are unique to women, and how can we use them to our advantage?

In this episode, I’m joined by professor of linguistics and author of LIKE, LITERALLY, DUDE, Valerie Fridland.

We have a fascinating conversation about interesting things about speech, language and how we communicate.

What we find in language is the unexpected, the novel is always more powerful than the same old, same old, and that is one of the main drivers of change. -Valerie Fridland

3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode

- It’s not bad English, it’s the evolution of English

As parents, we might think our kids using words like ‘sus’ and ‘fire’ are decaying the language, but are these truncations completely normal?

- How to be heard the way you want

Women have developed strategies to be polite and still get themselves heard. How do we take advantage of beliefs people have about vocal pitch?

- Vocal fry and “Valley Girl accents”

Are some of the things that are seen as annoying and negative actually a way for women to have more authority?

Seeing how we live our lives is how our kids gauge reality and ultimately create the lives they want.

If we make them feel like parenthood means giving up what we love, that’s what they’ll believe. If we show them that we can have things we’re passionate about, they’ll follow that example.

Being mothers, business owners and everything else in our lives certainly isn’t easy, and that’s okay. The more honest we are about that and the less we obsess over balance, the better the journey gets.

In this episode, I’m joined by professional climber, conservation entrepreneur, founder of Legado and the author of “More: Life on the Edge of Adventure and Motherhood”, Majka Burhardt. We talk about her journey, what she wants to teach her kids and the power of deconstructing and reinventing everything.

Seeking balance means that one day we’ll achieve it and be perfect. Motherhood made me realize that everything exists together and it’s always moving. -Majka Burhardt

3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode

- Do it with joy, but also with honesty

We all have different aspects to our identity. How does motherhood color those things and how we show up in all our roles?

- Take yourself on an adventure

How did Majka choose what life, motherhood and entrepreneurship looked like for her without following convention?

- It’s okay if our kids aren’t insanely passionate about anything

There’s a lot of pressure around the idea of having a passion. Does that do a disservice to our children?

Guest Bio

She is the Founder and Executive Director of Legado and the author of Vertical Ethiopia: Climbing Toward Possibility in the Horn of Africa, which was short-listed for the Banff Book Award, as well as her latest book, More: Life on the Edge of Adventure and Motherhood, a Next Big Idea Club must-read.

More: Life on the Edge of Adventure and Motherhood is an intense and emotional epistolary memoir by one of the world's top ice climbers, born at the confluence of motherhood, adventure, career, and marriage. As leading professional climbers and mountain guides, Majka Burhardt and her husband led globe-trotting, adventure-seeking lives. When she learns that she’s pregnant—with twins—Burhardt at first tries to balance her pursuit of extreme risk with her new reality of maternal responsibility. However, she is ultimately forced to face the avalanche of emotions unleashed by the biggest disruption she’s ever confronted—in the mountains or otherwise. Based on the letters and journals Burhardt diligently kept over the course of her pregnancy and the first five years of her children’s lives, More takes the reader on an around-the-world journey as Burhardt explores the transformative, identity-shifting experience of motherhood and its irreversible impact on career, identity, marriage, and self.
